The Doolittle Raiders
April 18, 1942
During World War II, Pendleton Airport played a critical role, serving as a pivotal training ground for the Doolittle Raiders, the brave men who carried out the first air raid on the Japanese mainland following the attack on Pearl Harbor. This event marked a turning point in the war and solidified the airport's place in military history.
Led by Lieutenant Colonel James "Jimmy" Doolittle, the raid was a significant morale booster for the United States and its allies, demonstrating that Japan was not invulnerable to American air power. The mission involved launching B-25 Mitchell bombers from the deck of the USS Hornet, a feat that had never been attempted before due to the large size and weight of the bombers.
The Triple Nickles
December 30th, 1943 - December 15th, 1947
Adding to its historical significance, Pendleton Airport was also connected to the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, known as the "Triple Nickles." This all-Black paratrooper unit, the first of its kind, was stationed at Pendleton as they trained for dangerous missions during the war. The Triple Nickles were tasked with a unique and perilous mission called "Operation Firefly," which involved jumping into remote areas of the Pacific Northwest to fight wildfires ignited by Japanese balloon bombs. Their presence at Pendleton represents a significant chapter in both military and civil rights history, as they broke racial barriers while serving their country with distinction.
In recognition of their contributions and legacy, Pendleton hosted a special event in April 2024 to honor the Triple Nickles. The event celebrated the courage and accomplishments of these pioneering paratroopers, ensuring that their stories continue to inspire future generations.
